“Ghetto” Feature Allowed for Neighborhood Maps

Microsoft makes the call

Imagine you are visiting an unfamiliar area and you are unsure of your safety. Microsoft has patent the new “ghetto” feature on their GPS feature, which tells a pedestrian if the area is safe.

As the beginning of this feature rolls out, I am positive this will transfer to the real estate industry and buyers looking to purchase in a new area. With out of town buyers, they typically ask their agent if the area is safe or in a bad part of town.  Since agents cannot slander a neighborhood, they can refer them to other resources with crime watch.

When homeowners can view the map, I wonder if the can dispute their neighborhood dinged “ghetto.”  Microsoft may have to deal with some lawsuits, as it could potentially bring down the home value in marked unsafe areas.

Interested to see how this maps out…
